Credit Repair in Baby Steps

Credit repair is not an overnight process. It is a process that takes some time and effort to clear up. The good news is, though, that you can take credit repair steps in baby steps and one step at a time. How do you know if you are in need of credit repair? Most financial and credit experts agree that if you credit score is lower than 600, which 25 percent of Americans have, it is time to perform resuscitation on your credit. Having a credit score below 600 typically means you cannot obtain approval on anything from mortgages to credit cards. Baby steps credit repair starts by implementing the following three steps into your credit habits.

Always Pay Your Bills on Time

One of the biggest pieces to calculating your credit score is paying your bills on time. This also means that one of the biggest and fastest ways to boost your credit score is to start making your payments on time. In addition, always pay your bills on or before the due dates. To give you some perspective, when you make a late payment, it can reduce your credit score by 90 points. While it only takes a few years for a late payment showing on your credit report to drop off, it still leaves lasting effects on the score itself, so start by always, always paying your bills on time. Doing this for one to two years straight can significantly boost your score.

Check for Accuracy

You are entitled to one free credit report each year. Use this to your advantage by pulling a credit report from each of the three agencies on an annual basis. Scour the reports for inaccuracies, errors, questionable items, etc. You can challange these items yourself but you're probably better off having a reputable credit repair company do it for you.

Be a Responsible Credit User

No matter what your credit situation is or has been in the past, today is a new day. Start small by using and paying off one credit card per month. Build a new history so that your current and future creditors see that you are a responsible credit user. As time goes by, showing how responsible you are earns you points in your credit score and may make the difference between a bad credit score and a good one. Credit repair does require you to do a lot of work, but if you take credit repair one step at a time, it can make just as much of a difference.
